Jesus in the Jewish Holidays

Lecture Series

Jesus said I came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets (Matthew 5:17). In John 5:46 He also proclaimed that Moses wrote of Him, but what did He refer to? Was it simply a handful of cryptic prophecies or is there a broad and complete picture? The Greek term “to fulfill” means to fill a container completely that was only partially full. Therefore, perhaps many of the characters, stories, laws, holidays, and even the Tabernacle, in the five books of Moses paint for us a picture of who He is.

This course will focus on the major Jewish holidays in the Bible: Passover, Shavuot (Pentecost), Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Succot (Feast of Tabernacles), and Shabat (the Sabbath). We will review how and why they are celebrated. In addition, we will try to understand how each one represents elements of Jesus’ life, ministry, and purpose. If time permits at the end, we will study Purim from the book of Esther.

Course Facilitator
I grew up in a Jewish home, regularly attending synagogue. However, my mother was not Jewish, and secretly taught us that Jesus was our Messiah. Through her and my rabbi, I developed a deep love of the Scriptures. Subsequently, I have been a life-long Bible student, and teacher. I believe to completely understand the New Testament, one needs to know the Old Testament, and to completely appreciate the Old, one must know the New; it's one book. Currently, I am a retired physician living in Israel for the last five years.
