The Date of the Last Supper

The Last Supper is one of the most important events in final week of Jesus' ministry in Jerusalem but there appears to be a significant difference between the Gospels in the way that they narrate this event. Did Jesus celebrate the Last Supper as a Passover meal (as the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke seem to indicate) or before the Passover (as the Gospel of John states)?
